Lazy Bear Lodge in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada has been advertising polar bear adventures in early winter for years. I’ve always past on them for various reasons. Then this year they offered something different – a journey to Fireweed Island to see the bears in summer, in the flowers. Now here was something completely different. As a *major* bonus the trip also included multiple experiences on the Churchill river and in Hudson Bay with the 1000’s of Beluga whales that live there. THIS I couldn’t pass up.
After a commercial flight to Winnipeg, Manitoba and a few nights in that city we had a charter flight to Churchill. It’s that or a 50 hour train ride. No roads to that part of the world. Note, if you get to Winnipeg spending a full day in the Candian Museum for Human Rights. It’s an amazing facility!
Once in Churchill the excursions involved zodiac rides on the fridged water, a larger boat ride and hike over rocky shores of Fireweed Island and “aquagliding” with the Belugas.
The action was incredible! 1000’s of belugas including ones coming right up to my camera as I hung my head off the edge of the aquaglide matt into the freezing waters. When on Fireweed Island there were so many bears at one point we needed to wait to get a clear path back to our zodiac and on to the larger boat. Also the bears took an interest in the boat as well. Check this out.
Overall a wonderful trip!!
